Enige tijd geleden schreef ik een stukje over Zoetje Knook, die getrouwd was met Dirk Nicolaas van Malssen. Dat stukje ging een hele andere kant op dan de route die nu opeens wordt uitgelegd. Dirk van Malssen was van rond 1905 tot 1930 in verschillende functies werkzaam bij de posterij in Noordwijk. Bijgaande kaart laat echter zien dattie – naast postbeambte – ook een ongetwijfeld lucratieve postzegelhandel had opgezet:  “Briefmarken, Francobolli, Sellos, Stamps, Timbres de Poste”, Dirk was van alle internationale markten thuis.

Deze kaart was gericht aan niemand minder dan Warren Howard Colson in Boston (“Colson of Boston” zie foto-inzet). Colson was in zijn tijd één van de grootste, zo niet dé grootste postzegelfirma in de Verenigde Staten. Lees zijn hagiografie opgenomen in de Hall of Fame op www.stamps.org

Colson (1882-1963) was a famous specialist dealer in classic stamps, mainly U.S., Confederate States and Hawaii. For over half a century he bought and sold great rarities for his clientele consisting of the most famous collectors of his time. Colson began in the late 1890s as a partner in the New England Stamp Co., one of the largest and most influential stamp companies of the period. He left in 1906, forming his own company, Colson of Boston, and from the start bought and sold the great rarities. In October 1906 Colson published a private monthly newsletter Postage Stamps for Advanced Collectors consisting of a dated calendar illustrating a rarity and a letter describing rarities for sale or items of interest about the state of philately. It continued for more than 50 years (Vol. 51 carries a 1956 date). Colson wrote three books. They were Postage Stamps and Their Collection: Handbook No. 1, The Bowers Collection (1907), Colson of Boston – His Stamps (1926), and Colson of Boston and the Duckwall Collection (1919). Each one described and illustrated collections of U.S rarities he offered for sale. He helped form the outstanding U. S. collections of his time, most notably Caspary, Hind, Gibson, Ackerman, Lapham, and Boker. “Colson of Boston” made a permanent impact on American philately. The mark “W.H.C.” on an item, or the statement “ex-Colson,” carries special meaning to advanced collectors.”

Daar was Dirk van Malssen natuurlijk maar een kleine jongen bij. Met zijn kaartje naar Boston bood hij zijn diensten aan bij Colson. En mogelijk wás hij ook een belangrijk Nederlands adres voor deze gerenommeerde filateliespecialist, maar hij was ook een gemakkelijk adres: als postbeambte kon hij natuurlijk gemakkelijk een paar velletjes afscheuren en voor meer dan de nominale waarde in een envelop naar Amerika sturen. “I keep only a small stock”  fantaseerde hij er nog bij.
