Antique print, titled: ‘Noortwyck’ – This print shows the emblem of Noordwijk’s chamber of rhetoric / dramatic society (rederijkerskamer), which was competing in the Haerlem Landjuweel (competition).
From: ‘Const-thooende Juweel, By de loflijkcke stadt Haerlem …’, published by Zacharias Heyns, Zwolle, 1607-08. This was an elaborate account of the most famous Landjuweel (drama competition) held in the Dutch Republic and important for theatrical history on the continent at the time of Shakespeare.
Made by ‘Zacharias Heyns’ after an anonymous artist. Author and possibly engraver: Zacharias Heyns (1566 – 1630) who was a Flemish printer / publisher, editor / author and engraver, active in Amsterdam and Zwolle. In Amsterdam he became one of the founding members of the chamber of rhetoric called ‘Wit lavender’ for which he wrote two plays.
