Het Hoboken Historical Museum in New Jersey/USA bezit een collectie foto’s onder de titel “Holland-America Line Memorabilia Collection”. In die collectie deze foto van de toen 46 jarige Jacobus Hut en zijn toen 43 jarige vrouw Tjitske Sikkema. Ze waren in het gezelschap van hun 13 (dertien!!) bloedjes van kinderen. De hele familie Hut was net in New York aangekomen met de ss Veendam en onderweg naar een broer van Jacobus die al eerder geëmigreerd was en boerde in Goshen, zo’n 100 kilometer verder naar boven. We schrijven 22 juli 1947. De New York Times van 23 juli was diep onder de indruk van de familie en besteedde een artikeltje aan hun wedervaren: “One of the largest family groups to arrive on a Dutch ship since the war’s end.”
De familie Hut was afkomstig uit Noordwijk. Vader Jacobus was er commissie bij de belastingen. Dat vinden we terug bij Hans Montanus evenals de namen van het echtpaar (ook hun trouwdatum: 14 juni 1929). Blijkbaar konden ze het niet meer uithouden in Nederland na de oorlog en zagen ze een betere toekomst in het verschiet in de Verenigde Staten, waar broer en zwager Henry (‘Henk”?) Hut zich al eerder gevestigd had.
Op de site van Hans Montanus komen we nog wel de namen te weet van tenminste 5 van de 13 kids: Tetje Grietje, Gerrit Pieter, Sijske Aafke, Pieter Willem en Willem (zonder Pieter). Hoe de overige 8 kinderen heetten, vermelden de records niet.
Wat er van de familie geworden is, weet ik ook niet. Ik probeer te googelen op “Goshen” and “Hut” en krijg dan alleen maar de lokale Pizza Hut naar boven, maar daarmee had deze familie niks van doen.
Ik kan eindeloos naar de foto blijven kijken – ook met een zekere ontroering – en me afvragen hoe en wat en wie en waar en nu?

Ik kon nog vinden dat zij in de Wilhelminastraat woonden en zo rond 1935 vanuit Groningen naar Noordwijk waren gekomen.

Een van de zonen heette Sicco en was een tijdje gelegerd als US soldaat in Duitsland. Zou nu ongeveer 84 kunnen zijn.
My mother is the youngest girl in this picture (Gretje Hut). They changed their last name to Hutt after immigrating to the United States. After living in Goshen, they settled in Palmyra New York. As of this post, four of the children have passed away, including Sikke who was referenced in an earlier post.
I just found out about this blog from my son, Brian Feenstra. My Name is Grace (Hutt) Feenstra. I am the youngest girl in the picture on in this blog. I find it wonderful and fascinating that you were talking about my family. My family left Noordwijk via the Veendam in July 1947. We arrived in Hoboken New Jersey 10 days later. My father’s brother already lived in the USA in Goshen New York, so that is where we lived the first year. My youngest brother was born in The US that November. My parents acquired a farm in Middletown NY, and we lived there until 1954. We then moved to Marion NY, where my father continued to farm until he retired. My parents did not leave the Netherlands because they disliked it. It was their homeland. After the war, conditions were bleak and it was difficult for them to visualize a future for their large family. They emigrated entirely to give the children opportunities for a better future. All of the children were able to obtain a higher education and do well. (By working very hard and paying their own way). Both parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister have passed away.
As a matter of fact, this is very fortuitous. I am going to be in Noordwijk with my own family for a few hours on the 24th of this month (June 2023) to show my children my childhood home. I am still a “Dutchman” at heart. My parents went back to the Netherlands several times to visit family. I have also been back several times.
