We hebben al eens eerder gezien dat Sigmund Freud te gast was in Noordwijk in de zomer van 1910. Hij verbleef toen in Pension Noordzee, waarover hij nog wel aardige dingen schreef. In die tijd al correspondeerde hij – ook vanuit Noordwijk – met de Duitse psychoanalyticus Karl Abraham en drie jaar later was Abraham dat nog niet vergeten. Freud trouwens ook niet. Abraham schrijft op 23 mei 1913 aan Freud onder meer het volgende:

Our plans for the summer have changed. We have to give the children a longer holiday by the sea and we will probably choose Noordwijk, which you know. My wife is going away with the children at the beginning of July, and I am not going until the end of July. I shall have a few weeks rest and then I shall visit the Dutch and Belgian towns with my wife for a fortnight. In the meantime the children will remain in Noordwijk, and we shall be near them. (……) If it is not be too much trouble for you, I should be very grateful for a very short account of how satisfied you were with your hotel in Noordwijk. Abraham

Pas in een brief van 31 juli van dat jaar gaat Freud in op die laatste vraag, maar dan is het  veuls te laat, want de familie Abraham bevindt zich dan al in Noordwijk, en wel in Pension Ozon. Freud schrijft:

For us it is a pleasant thought that you are now enjoying our beautiful Noordwijk too. Above all the sunsets were magnificent. Wind and dunes I do not like. Freud

Misschien waren die wind en die duinen wel de reden voor Freud om nooit meer in Noordwijk terug te komen. Maar tegelijk schrijft hij wel een beetje dubbelzinnig over ‘our beautiful Noordwijk’. Het valt moeilijk te rijmen allemaal. Abraham doet op 6 augustus vanuit Noordwijk nog een laatste duit in dit zakje ouwewijvenpraat:

We like Noordwijk very much indeed. Just today we visited the Museum of Antiquities in Leyden. I have seldom taken such pleasure in walking through a collection. There is too much in it for one visit. Abraham
